I'm not a fancy writer... just a girl that likes a good drink.

Mexicali is a local hot spot in Studio City, and it's the home of the Margatini. It's a combination of a margarita and a martini and I love it!! It's definitely the most popular drink there. Unfortunately, it's not on the happy hour menu. *sighs*  But, the Margatini is only $7.75, so I usually bypass the happy hour cocktails and go with that. But since this is a happy hour blog, I recently tried the happy hour margarita ($4.75). It was good... a bit sweet for my liking. But I'm pretty picky when it comes to drinks and I do know others that like it, so give it a try. For me, I would either go with the Margatini, a house wine ($3.75), or a well drink ($3.75). Nice prices, huh!

They have a small selection of food for happy hour that runs $2.95 per plate. Here's what I've tried:
-Chiquito Quesadilla: Small, but okay for $3.
-Queso Fundido: Four cheeses melted with Poblano Chiles and mushrooms. Soooo good. It's a heart attack waiting to happen, but you have to order it.
-Chicken or Beef Empanadas: They're good and you get two!
-Dos Chiquito Tacos: You get your choice of chicken, braised beef, carnitas, or shrimp. I've had the carnitas and the meat was great but the tortillas were awful. I just ate the meat with a fork.

Along with the Margatini, Mexicali also has some good deals on the regular menu. The Grilled Artichoke is only $3.25 and their Sangrias are $6 each or $20 for a pitcher.

So Mexicali definitely has some good happy hour prices. The drinks are decent, but the food is mainly finger foods. It's good place to go to get some drinks if you aren't that hungry, or you can just opt to go for the regular menu. Their happy hour runs daily 4-7pm, but then it starts up again at 11pm. I like going early around 4pm and sitting out on the patio for some pre-dinner drinks.

  1. Love Mexicali - it's part of my early experiences in LA and the place where I had my first date with my now wife.

  2. I know of several episodes of food poisoning from this restaurant. And they are known to recycle foods.
